Spelling Bee Spelling Bee: STORY UPDATED! Some kids play football, some kids play soccer, others play chess or spell. That’s right, they spell as in competitive spelling competitions. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a competition that is held each year and was started in 1925. Since then students from around the country compete to reach the national level.  Recently, the Cortland Enlarged School District held its 2020-21 Spell-off. Any student who has not reached the eighth grade before August 31, 2020 or reached their 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2020 is eligible to compete. All students compete at the same grade level. Cortland is proud to send three students to the first level of competition in Syracuse held on Saturday, January 23. SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAM NOMINATIONS 2020 SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAM NOMINATIONS 2020: The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), Inc. believes that the athletic participation of students enhances their academic performances. To support this belief, the Scholar/Athlete Team Award Program began in 1991. Varsity teams who have 75% of their team earn a 90.0% or higher GPA during their season qualify for the NYSPHSAA award. Individuals can also qualify, if the team does not, with an average of 90% or better. Team nominations from the Cortland Senior High School for the Fall 2020 season are: Boys Cross Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis and an individual honor from the Girls Cross Country team Alexis Brown. Title 1 at Cortland Schools Title 1 at Cortland Schools: Title I (pronounced “Title One”) is the largest federal aid program for elementary, middle, and high schools. Through Title I, the Federal government provides funding to school districts around the country based on the number of low-income families in each district. Each district uses its Title I money for extra educational services for children who are behind in school. Schools where more than half of all students are low-income can operate a school-wide Title I project. This includes all Cortland schools. Continue to read.
2020-2021 Budget Results 2020-2021 Budget Results:  On June 16, the residents of the Cortland Enlarged City School District approved the proposed 2020-21 School District budget of $50,170,001.  “Thank you to everyone who sent in their absentee ballot and voted,” Superintendent of Schools Michael H. Hoose said. “Your support of the Cortland Enlarged City School District and its mission to educate the children of this community is very much appreciated.” Voters: Approved a $50,170,001 budget for the 2020-21 school year that increases spending 1.2%, and carries a 1.09% tax levy increase: 2,042 yes, 733 no. 2020-2021 Budget Update 2020-2021 Budget Update: The Cortland Board of Education began the process of creating the 2020-21 school budget six months ago, prior to dealing with Co vid-19 and all of the changes associated with dealing with the virus. As you are aware, it has taken a toll in lives lost and created huge financial challenges across the nation, especially in New York State.   The proposed budget reflects a 1.2% budget increase and a 1.09% tax levy increase. It is the first budget increase for the District in five years and it is the first budget in nearly a decade that does not use our dwindling reserves to balance the budget. Cortland Voters go to the Polls March 31, 2020 to Decide on the Sale of Parker School Cortland Voters go to the Polls March 31, 2020 to Decide on the Sale of Parker School: Due to declining enrollment, the Board of Education made a difficult decision to close both Virgil and Parker Elementary Schools at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. We have been working with the City of Cortland and the Town of Virgil to plan for the potential sale of the buildings.  After securing an independent appraisal for the building and having a number of meetings with the City of Cortland, we were able to negotiate a contract for the sale of Parker Elementary School. The City plans to rent the building to the YWCA and CAPCO who will provide affordable daycare and early childhood education services. Running for school board may be for y ou!  Many people hesitate when they consider running for school board because they do not know the basic facts about what it exactly entails. The most frequently asked question is, “Is it time consuming?” The duration of time you would be committed to would be twice a month meetings. 4 Students Receive Recognition at Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 4 Students Receive Recognition at Scholastic Art and Writing Awards: The Cortland High School Art Department is pleased to announce that ten students were chosen to participate in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a nationally recognized and adjudicated art show showcasing “originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.” Thousands of Central New York teenagers from more than 90 junior and senior high schools submitted their best artwork in the 2020 CNY Scholastic Art Awards. The artwork is on daily exhibition at the Whitney Applied Technology Center at Onondaga Community College through Feb. 28. 2020 Spelling Bee Contestants Head to Regional Bee 2020 Spelling Bee Contestants Head to Regional Bee: The Cortland Enlarged City School District's 2019-20 Spell Off was recently held. Students were quizzed on words such as parachute, coincidence, and suffuse.  The top four Randall Middle School finalists and top four Junior High finalists (listed below) will represent the District and compete in the 2020 Post-Standard Spelling Bee. Contestants must not have passed beyond eighth grade before Feb. 1, 2020 or reached their 16th birthday on or before May 25, 2020 to be eligible. All students will compete at the same grade level. The first level of competition in Syracuse is a written spell off exam at Christian Brothers Academy on Saturday, January 25.
