Trash Compactor will save Time, Money and the Environment

In a significant move towards sustainability and cost-efficiency, the Cortland School District has recently rented a new trash compactor from Syracuse Haulers. Dubbed the Purple Compactor, the compactor allows the district to streamline waste collection, significantly reducing the frequency of trash pickups. The compactor is designed to hold a substantial amount of waste, and once it reaches 80% capacity, the crew will call for a pickup. Currently, the district's trash truck services each school three times a week, but with the introduction of the compactor, officials estimate that waste disposal will only be necessary once every three weeks when school is in session. "This innovative solution not only represents a cost-saving measure for the district but also demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship," stated Jordon Lilley, Supervisor of School Transportation & Operations. By minimizing the number of trips required by the trash truck, the district aims to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute positively to the environment. As the school district takes this proactive step towards waste reduction, it sets an example for others to follow, underscoring the importance of environmentally responsible practices in educational institutions. With the compactor in place, the district is poised to save money and protect the planet, one trash pickup at a time.
